Zed Books has embarked on an ambitious two-year strategy to transform the business into a fully digital publishing house. As part of this strategy its current Directorship is looking for four new digital leaders to join the organisation. The recruitment for the first two of these four roles is now open.

Zed Books is not your average publishing house. It is the world’s biggest publishing collective – the organisation has a completely flat structure, and is owned in equal parts by those working in it. This non-hierarchical model is radical, completely unique and central to the organisation’s mission: Zed doesn’t just make political books, it makes books politically.

And so, this is an opportunity to join one of the most unique and socially significant publishing projects of the 21st century. Not just to work for it, but to be it, to own it and to grow it in a way that will completely change the publishing landscape.


The Directorship is looking for two co-owners and co-directors whose functional/technical responsibilities would fall under the following two role descriptions:

Business Processes Director
Overall Aim
Develop, deliver and then manage business-wide processes and technology to support the business strategy and maximise value for Zed Books Ltd

Key Responsibilities

Processes

  1. Develop and manage business-wide processes (inc. workflows, dataflows and other information flows) to:
    – deliver maximum value for Zed Books Ltd
    – future-proof the organisation in terms of its growth strategy
    – support product acquisition, pre-production objectives and inventory management
    – support sales and marketing objectives; and
    – constantly improve efficiency and effectiveness
  2. Integrate pre-production and post-production processes with cross-business processes such as accounting, IP, royalties and art department, for maximum efficiency and effect
  3. Contribute annual processes and technology strategy and plans in line with the business strategy and plan

Technology

  1. Develop and manage the technological solutions that will support efficient and effective systems and processes, outsource elements of this as required, managing those relationships on behalf of Zed Books Ltd
  2. Implement and manage (including outsourcing) technological solutions and integrated tools that will support efficient and effective communication throughout the business
  3. Manage the integration of new technology systems as the company grows, e.g. through APIs, to allow data to flow where it’s needed and decisions to happen in real-time on zedbooks.net

People

  1. Ensure that external stakeholders, in-house teams and individuals are managed and supported through changes to organisational processes and technology
  2. Ensure these changes are communicated effectively, both internally and externally, from proposal, through to plans and eventual adoption

Key organisational contacts

  1. Work closely with the Digital Director to ensure that business-wide systems, processes and technology support the specific aims of rapidly increasing discoverability and supporting data management and optimisation
  2. Work closely with Digital Director and Brand and Growth Director to develop and manage business-wide processes that support sales and post-production objectives
  3. Work closely with the Customer Experience Director to support the rapid integration of required updates and changes following testing of ideas with real customers (B2B and B2C)
  4. Manage all outsourced systems, processes and technology teams/freelancers

Person Spec

Description
Highly analytic and self-driven, deriving satisfaction from analysing complex information flows and creating solutions that enable the creative capacity, management and growth of a business.

You will own the business’s processes and technology and manage them in a way that facilitates the effective flow of data in and out of the organisation. You will also own the change management associated with processes and technological changes.

Experience and skills

  1. Proven experience in driving operational improvement projects from start to finish including project management, synthesis and modelling, problem solving, and communication of insights, feedback and recommendations across an organisation and to budget
  2. Demonstrable leadership skills, especially with regards to operational effectiveness and change management
  3. Demonstrable ability to provide an holistic view and overarching systems and processes strategy for a business
  4. Proven experience of running implementation and digital transformation projects to ensure technology serves business needs
  5. Proven experience of working closely with internal and external stakeholders to steer change management, highlighting pain points, setting targets and providing regular progress reports, while embedding analytics into decision making so that it becomes the norm across the business
  6. Demonstrable ability to manage IT projects and solution providers
  7. Proven experience in successful external relationship building and management
  8. Demonstrable ability in principles of data governance and curating in-house data flows
  9. Ability to read and interpret complex contracts and to discuss data concepts in contractual negotiations
  10. Up to the minute IT understanding

Digital Director
Overall Aim
Develop, deliver and then manage a digital and data optimisation strategy to maximise value for Zed Books Ltd and rapidly increasing the discoverability of the Zed brand, Zed products and Zed content.

Key Responsibilities

Digital

  1. Own all organisational data, including ownership of the organisation’s bibliographic database and ensure data quality and across the organisation
  2. Contribute annual performance optimisation strategy and plan in line with the business strategy and plan
  3. Optimise discoverability of Zed, it’s products and content online so as to increase brand awareness and produce maximum value for Zed Books Ltd
  4. Work with both key external stakeholders and the in-house post-production team to:
    • optimise the digital customer experience across all sales channels (B2B and B2C)
    • optimise the digital customer experience across all marketing platforms
  5. Source and combine traditional and behavioural data to uncover meaningful insights about customers, such as their preferences, interests, and needs and then manage its application across the business
  6. Analyse traditional and behavioural customer data and provide Zed Books Ltd. with strategic insights regarding online presence, product performance, increasing brand awareness as well as broader business development and growth
  7. Ensure digital marketing processes, data and platforms provide maximum value for Zed Books Ltd
  8. Ensure that zedbooks.net is optimised to provide maximum value for Zed Books Ltd

People

  1. Ensure that external stakeholders, in-house teams and individuals are managed and supported through the changes in organisational culture required to adopt digital analytics across the organisation and in support of the business strategy
  2. Ensure these changes are communicated effectively, both internally and externally, from proposal, through to plans and eventual adoption

Key organisational contacts

  1. Work with the Business Processes Director to ensure systems, processes and technology support optimisation requirements
  2. Work with the Social and Content Director and the Brand and Growth Director to ensure optimisation of all content hosted by Zed Books Ltd on zedbooks.net and across all marketing platforms
  3. Work with the Customer Experience Director and Sales Director to ensure optimisation of product metadata across all digital sales channels
  4. Manage insource/outsourcing for the optimisation function, including the management of external developers, UX/UI teams, etc. as necessary

Person Spec

Description
Self-driven, highly analytic and passionate about optimisation and the impact it can have on the business’ mission, brand awareness and commercial success. Is genuinely inspired by the opportunities to digitalise within the publishing industry and wider media sector.

You will own the company’s data, as well as its analytics and optimisation. This will involve a step change for us in terms of technological and cultural adoption of digital analytics throughout the business, for which you will be responsible.

Experience and skills

  • Proven experience of data ownership and management
  • Proven experience in a digital business environment
  • Proven experience in ecommerce, digital advertising or digital marketing necessary
  • Proven experience in a role where quantitative skills are applied
  • Demonstrable thorough understanding of B2C digital marketing, digital analytics, optimisation, ensuring data quality and cleansing
  • Demonstrable knowledge of Google and Adobe Analytics and proven experience with optimisation testing and research tools like Google Experiments, Adobe Target, Optimizely, Maxymiser or Qubit
  • Demonstrable knowledge of web development technologies, familiarity with scripting and programming
  • Demonstrable knowledge of A/B testing, build – measure – learn cycles and growth hacking
  • Demonstrable understanding of advertising, including SEM and social media marketing
  • Demonstrable ability to lead digital transformation projects from a strategic and organisational culture point of view, especially re. embedding analytics into decision making
